I hate to have preemptive reviews, but I knew I wasn't going to like this well before I heard it. If I eventually warm to the freak-folk thing (like I did with DFA, but never really with MIA), please lock me in a room with some Pixies records for awhile until I regain my sanity. Yes, regain my sanity through Pixies listening.
Upon a second, third and fourth listen, MMJ song "Gideon" is pretty damned grood. My Ol's KY Blog (alt name for Bob Mould's blog?) has it.
I got Gideon last night, I enjoy it, I think the U2 comparison is apt but it also sounds like something else that I haven't been able to place yet.
I don't feel like it's work, but that may be because I have no concept of "work" anymore. More like a succession of accomplished tasks, and this is one of them.
If you get into freak-folk I'll hire Dave Grohl to rip on the drums in our apartment 24-7 (actually that may be an incentive). I think the music is boring for one, but feel like I mostly dislike it because the people seem like the kind of dumb hippies that everyone loathes.
Glad we're in agreement on dirty hippies and loathing. But hey, the Grateful Dead have their place, and the Polyphonic Spree are charmingly unicorn, rainbow and flowing robe-oriented, I just don't know who told these hippies that they were the future of interesting independent music. Oh, right.
The guitar line in "Gideon" has echoes of Squeeze's "If It's Love," but I have to doubt that's intentional...
While on the subject of Pitchfork, I have the Junior Senior song with the B-52s ladies singin' on it, although I would've sworn the vocals were done by non-native English speakers. It's alright, if you like moving your feet and not stopping the beat.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go to Bob Mould's blog today.

Is it very wrong that when I get a post up here, i feel like I've done some work?
Also, I was really hoping someone was selling a DeLorean.
